FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — At Tuesday's Fort Wayne City Council meeting, one of the City of Fort Wayne's newest employees sat in attendance.
Her role? Helping identify and tackle issues that cause homelessness in the Summit City.
The City of Fort Wayne hired Amanda Fall to be the manager of
homeless services, a position that aims to identify issues ailing the homeless population and collaborate with local organizations to tackle those issues.
"I've been trying to meet everyone I can in our community that touches homelessness and just learn more about what they're doing," Fall said.
During Tuesday's City Council meeting, representatives with St. Joseph Missions women's shelter, United Way of Allen County and The Rescue Mission spoke before council members to discuss efforts to provide for the homeless population. As part of her new position, Fall will work with the aforementioned organizations in order to aid their efforts.
"I thought it was a great display of how our community collaborates to solve a problem," Fall said.
Councilman Geoff Paddock -- who represents Fort Wayne's 5th District and serves on the Regional Planning Council on Homelessness that oversee most of northeast Indiana -- discussed hiring Hall and applauded the coordinated efforts of the organizations fighting homelessness.
"We all want to work together as a community," Paddock said during Tuesday's meeting. "Particularly, as we see so many things thriving ... dealing with the homeless is also an issue that we all have to come to grips with."
Prior to accepting the role, Fall said she held positions as a social worker for 20 years before working at the YMCA's downtown branch. ...read more read less
