Four months after a 12-year-old boy was shot and killed during a party in an abandoned National City house, police said Thursday they have arrested a suspect.
Carlos Maldonado, 18, was arrested on suspicion of murder and multiple weapons charges in the death of seventh-grader Elijah Smith. The boy w
as shot at the home on N Avenue near Ninth Street just before midnight Nov. 15, National City police said.
Details on the arrest were unavailable Thursday.
Maldonado’s arraignment is scheduled Friday in San Diego Superior Court, according to online arrest records. He is being held without bail.
On the night of the shooting, officers received a report that multiple people had been shot during a party at a vacant home, investigators said.
When officers arrived, they found five gunshot victims. Elijah died at the scene. Four of the five victims were under 18 years old.
Neighbors had complained to police four to six times over two years about loud music, parties and trespassers on the property.
The party Elijah attended had been promoted on social media, although the house was boarded up and electricity had been cut off, according to the company that owned it.
Elijah’s family did not know how he, a Lemon Grove Academy Middle student, was able to get to the party, Sofia Alvarez-Smith, his mother, said at the time of the shooting.
Police reported that more than 100 people — mostly teens and young adults — had attended the party. National City police asked for assistance from nearby agencies to control the crowd and secure the area.
Witnesses told investigators the shooting stemmed from a fight between two groups.
“It’s not fair that I have to bury my 12-year-old son because some people think that it’s so easy to just grab a gun and just shoot somebody,” Alvarez-Smith said in November. “It’s not right, and it needs to stop already.” ...read more read less
