UPDATED COVERAGE: Jenkins Middle School closure: D11, CSFD joint statement (COLORADO SPRINGS) — Jenkins Middle School, part of Colorado Springs School District 11 (D11), is set to close on Friday, Jan. 17, according to a district spokesperson. On Thursday, Dec. 19, the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) notified the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department (PPRBD) of several structural concerns at Jenkins Middle School. According to a Notice of Unsafe Condition the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) sent to the school, there was damage to the interior wall at the library, cracking and defamation of the concrete block structure in various areas at the school, and more. "It is reported that the subject structure has been experiencing significant settlement beginningshortly after construction was completed in 1999," the letter said. "The majority of the differential settlement has occurred in the Northwest corner of the building." The building was built in 1999, and as of 2024 served 797 students according to Jenkins Middle School's website. On Thursday, Jan. 9, DFPC Building Inspector Bradley Duncan and Inspector Supervisor Bryon Horgen performed an investigative walk with members of CSFD, D11 staff, and PPRBD to determine the structural issues and the safe use of the middle school. Both Duncan and Horgen agreed that the damage was a cause for concern in the use of the school, and was deemed unsafe. "Until a structural analysis is completed and report is received stating the safe use of thebuilding, Jenkins Middle School must be evacuated after January 17, 2025 and persons other than necessary maintenance and construction staff employed to repair and remediate these unsafe conditions shall not enter or reenter until authorized to do so in accordance with Colorado Springs Fire Department’s determination," the letter continued.
