Fishers unanimously votes to annex roughly 1,000 acres into the city

FISHERS, Ind. — The most populated city in Hamilton County is about to get bigger.
After a unanimous decision from the city council Monday night, roughly 1,000 acres will be annexed into Fishers.
The Flat Fork subdivision is one of the areas being annexed.
The Rubys have lived in the neighborhood for several years and have been anticipating the annexation since they moved in.
“We knew it was going to happen, we just didn't know exactly when,” said Stephen Ruby.
Now that the City of Fishers has outgrown its boundaries, they're able to move forward.
The annexed area runs from East 113th to East 101st streets and from Florida Road to the Hamilton County line, affecting around 3,000 residents.
Until now, this zone in unincorporated Hamilton County has had to contract out its services.
“You've got an HOA who has to address a lot of those things, and sometimes they get done in a timely fashion, but sometimes it's just too much to be able to do,” said Stephen.
So far this winter, the Ruby's said they've already had some issues with the private companies for snow removal, and trash removal always causes complications.
“There are three different services you can pick from, and people pick from their own and contract their own,” said Sandy Ruby. “Therefore we have garbage cans out almost all the time.”
Now the city will handle that, and Fishers Police will patrol the area, instead of the Sheriff's Office.
However, residents will likely have to pay a little more in taxes than before.
"We have a pretty low tax rate, and hopefully, in totality, they see a lot more value than they do cost," said Mayor Scott Fadness.
Overall, the Rubys said their neighborhood is on board with the change.
“Will there be some things that happen with Fishers that I don't like? Probably, okay, but in general, the vast majority of things I think are going to be very beneficial for the neighborhood,” added Stephen.
The city said the vote at Monday's meeting went smoothly and is hoping the transition will as well.
The change will go into effect following the remonstration period this summer.
