Guest Oped: Medina Health Center – A New Chapter of Care and Community in Trenton
Jan 09, 2025
Medina Health Center’s new facility in Trenton has opened its doors, marking a transformative chapter for our community. More than just a building, it represents our unwavering commitment to providing free, high-quality healthcare for those who need it most – individuals who are frequently underinsured or uninsured.
At Medina, we believe healthcare is a fundamental human right. Too often, families in our community face impossible choices between medical care and basic needs. Our mission is to change that. Through primary care, behavioral health, preventive services, and specialized programs, we aim to address both individual needs and systemic health disparities.
Our new facility at 828 N Olden Avenue is a sanctuary of dignity and compassion where every patient is valued. Over the last decade, our “clinic without walls” model connected hundreds of patients annually with over 35 volunteer specialty practices, providing millions in pro-bono care. Now, with a new dedicated space, Medina can expand reach and amplify our impact —from routine checkups to comprehensive care.
We want patients to view Medina as their medical home. That is why we have invested heavily up-front in providing an appealing fully-renovated secure facility with the latest equipment and amenities.

Medina’s strength lies in its volunteers—the doctors, staff, and community members who drive our mission forward. As we settle into this new chapter, we invite the community to join our legacy of service. Whether through volunteering, sharing skills, or supporting our initiatives, there are countless ways to make an impact.
We also call on local organizations and businesses to collaborate with us. Together, we can design programs, expand resources, and ensure everyone in our community has access to care. While our services are free to patients, sustaining this model requires ongoing support. If you believe in creating a healthier future for Trenton, we invite you to join us.
Funding for Medina Health Clinic, is diverse and includes a wide array of sources that includes a recent $35,000 Community Impact Grant from the Princeton Area Community Foundation, various other area foundations grants, corporate contributions, funding from various partnering area charities whose clients Medina Clinic will serve and numerous individual members of the greater Trenton community many of whom have supported Medina since its formation in 2014.
An application is pending for a $649,351 to the Federal Department of Health & Human Services for funding for the Medina Clinic under the New Access Point Program. This program earmarks funds for provide primary health care to underserved populations. The application has the support of Senator Cory Booker, Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, County Executive Dan Benson and Trenton Mayor Reed Guscioria.
Dr. Kemi Ali, the long-time esteemed CEO of Henry J. Austin Health Center, will be serving as the founding part-time CEO of Medina Health Clinic.
Trenton’s diversity is its strength, and Medina reflects that spirit. Together, we can bridge gaps in healthcare access and ensure everyone—regardless of income, background, or status—can thrive. As Mayor Reed Gusciora reminds us, “Building a stronger Trenton starts with ensuring the health and well-being of our residents.”
