Photo by Mike Mulholland/Getty Images Detroit Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs has won monthly and weekly awards. Now he’s also up for a season-long award. On Thursday afternoon, the NFL announced that Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs has been named NFC Offensive Player of the Month, for the combined months of December and January. Over that stretch—the last five games—Gibbs has rushed for 439 yards and six rushing touchdowns on 87 carries (5.05 YPC). He also tacked on 24 catches for 235 yards and three more touchdowns. His production has been instrumental in keeping the Lions’ run game—and offense—afloat after the Lions lost running back David Montgomery to injury a few weeks back. This news comes just days after Gibbs was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the regular season finale against the Minnesota Vikings. In that game, Gibbs combined for 170 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns. Per the Lions PR Twitter account, Gibbs is just the second Lions running back ever to be named NFC Offensive Player of the Month, joining Hall of Famer Barry Sanders, who won it last in December of 1997. The PR account also noted that the Lions have now had four Player of the Month awards this season, a franchise high. September: Aidan Hutchinson — Defensive Player of the Month October: Jared Goff — Offensive Player of the Month November: Jake Bates — Special Teams Player of the Month December/January: Jahmyr Gibbs — Offensive Player of the Month But that’s not all for Gibbs. The NFL also announced on Thursday that the Lions running back is one of six finalists for the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Year. Here are the six candidates and their statistical accomplishments: Bills QB Josh Allen: 3,731 yards, 28 TDs, 6 INTs; 531 rushing yards, 12 TDs Bengals QB Joe Burrow: 4,918 yards, 43 TDs, 9 INTs; 201 rushing yards, 2 TDs Ravens QB Lamar Jackson: 4,172 yards, 41 TDs, 4 INTs; 915 rushing yards, 4 TDs Eagles RB Saquon Barkley: 345 rushes, 2,005 yards (5.8 YPC), 13 TDs; 33 catches, 278 yards, 2 TDs Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs: 250 rushes, 1,412 yards (5.6 YPC), 16 TDs; 52 catches, 517 yards, 4 TDs Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase: 127 catches, 1,708 yards, 17 TDs The winner of the award will be decided by fan vote.
