SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- In a letter to families sent out Tuesday, San Diego Unified School District stated that it was involved in a cybersecurity incident discovered late last month. The district shared the statement sent out to families with FOX 5/KUSI Wednesday, which said it learned of the cybersecurity incident Tuesday. The attack, which was discovered Dec. 28, 2024, specifically targeted PowerSchool, a global student information system provider used by SDUSD and other school districts across the country. Drew Rowlands, deputy superintendent of operations for SDUSD, stated that some student data was downloaded by "an unauthorized user," and that PowerSchool is working to see which types of information have been accessed. "PowerSchool has told us the situation has been contained, and they have taken actions to prevent the information from being used. We have reinforced to this vendor our expectations about upholding the highest data security standards," the letter said. This is the latest in a series of cybersecurity incidents faced by the district in recent years. In 2018, more than 500,000 students, parents and staff may have had their personal information accessed in a data breach discovered that October. Then, four years later, the district alerted the FBI and other local law enforcement agencies about another cyber attack which may have compromised data related to individuals affiliated with SDUSD. The district said it will continue to notify families about any important updates regarding the attack.
