'That's one more toy for one more child': Santa Joe Project to give away thousands of toys

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Community members and local businesses have gathered thousands ahead of the Santa Joe project's giveaway on Saturday. However, organizers said there is still an ongoing demand for presents.
Lasts month, Toys for Tots announced it would not be operating in Allen County. Angela Zen, founder of the Sarah Zen Foundation, said once she heard the news, her foundation, Icing for Izaac and others helped the Santa Joe Project started posting on Facebook, asking for presents to fill the 'gift gap'.
"Within 24 hours ... we ended up having over 100 toy donations," Zent said.
Zent said Santa Joe, also known as Joe Runyon, had been doing the initiative for 12 years, until retiring the project a few years back. This past month, he had been "called out of retirement" to help ensure the 790 families registered with the Santa Joe Project have presents to put under their tree.
But with over 7,000 toys donated to the Santa Joe Project so far, Runyon was not the only one who wanted to make Christmas wishes come true.
"[Community members] realized how many kids this was going to affect," Zent said. "I think it pulled on everybody's heartstrings ... because we do know that [Toys for Tots] was one of [families in need's] last resort, or the only resort, that they had to get Christmas."
Despite the hundreds of families who have already registered for presents, Zent said there are still more families in Allen County who would like to sign up for the Santa Joe Project. She said the initiative opened up registration for another 400 families on Tuesday, and, within a couple hours, all spots were taken.
Donations are still accepted to try to add more families to the sign-up. Zent said that any donor who contributions will help out Allen County families more than they know.
"That one teddy bear that ... someone may think 'oh it's not going to make a difference, it's only one toy', that's one more toy for one more child," Zent said. "That might be the only toy that child gets [this holiday season]."
As of now, over 7,000 toys have been collected for Allen County children.
Toy and monetary donations will be accepted through the Sarah Zent Foundation's Facebook.
Gift sign-ups are closed at the moment, but Zent said to keep checking the Santa Joe Project, the Sarah Zent Foundation, and the Icing for Izaac Facebook pages for potential updates.
The giveaway will be at Glenbrook Square on Saturday at 4201 Coldwater Rd. Presents will be distributed from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. to those who signed up.
