CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The Chicopee City Council has voted to approve the license for a new truck stop and travel center.

City councilors approved the license for the stop in a 10-3 vote Tuesday night. The pilot center will be located on Burnett Road near the Mass Pike. This project will include 16 pumps and be open 24/7.
City Councilors in support of the measure say it will help bring revenue into the city and in turn, keep taxes from getting even higher. Councilor Gary Labrie, who voted yes Tuesday night, said that in the last two years, taxes have gone up on average $200 each year.
Some residents who live in the area have expressed quality-of-life concerns about the project, however. They're largely concerned it will impact supply and demand, commutes to and from work, and the overall health of the community.
This vote comes after alleged threats to councilor Sam Shumsky back in November. He told 22News that after he voted to move the proposal for the new service station to a subcommittee, someone tampered with his vehicle, saying quote, "the lugnuts were loosened on my car" and "I received two phone calls from private numbers that wished me to harm in some ways."
This project has been two years in the making, and after last night's vote, it can officially move forward.
