Sheriff’s officer shoots, kills man who displayed gun in neighborhood off Carroll Road
Responding to reports that a man armed with a gun was having a mental health crisis, police swarmed the 2700 block of Ascension Court in a neighborhood near Carroll and Bethel roads Tuesday afternoon. The Allen County SWAT Team, Allen County Crisis Negotiation Team, and Indiana State Police were among those who came to the scene.
Stoppenhagen allegedly came out of the house armed with a gun two times before an officer shot him.
Police said Stoppenhagen was provided medical care at the scene and taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The coroner ruled his cause of death a gunshot wound to the torso. It was ruled a Homicide-Police Action Shooting, which is the standard ruling for shootings involving police officers.
