SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — New striping on Rancho Mission Road, near San Diego Mission Road, in Mission Valley is drawing safety concerns from some residents. Maria Shabalina has lived at her apartment complex on Rancho Mission Road for more than a year, and since a slurry seal project was completed in August, she said she's noticed more car crashes on her street. "One of our neighbors, he got rear-ended once and then his car ended up in the bike lane," Shabalina said. "I think we’re on now five or six and I can hear it from my bedroom window when somebody crashes.” City staff confirm the street was reduced from four lanes to two, and floating parking was added, along with protected bike lanes.  "I just don’t think that they were well thought out or well-planned out because it's going from one traffic pattern to another. It’s not safe for anybody who's riding in the bike lanes. It's not safe for anybody who is driving or parking," Shabalina said. Chloe Lauer, Executive Director of the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, said roads in the county have historically been car oriented. She added, “but a complete street considers the cyclist equally with a pedestrian equally with a driver.” Lauer explained the addition of bike lanes can take time to get used to, but can benefit drivers. "There’s a lower chance of them getting into a crash and a lower chance of them hitting a cyclist and even a car-to-car collision is reduced," Lauer said. In a statement, city staff confirm “What we implemented is consistent with the Mission Valley community plan and NACTO guidelines. However, engineers have opened up a traffic service request to evaluate the location to see if anything is needed given the report of accidents here. this is currently still ongoing.” In a separate statement, spokesperson Anthony Santacroce, the Supervising Public Information Officer for the City of San Diego, said, "The City is dedicated to installing bike lanes and creating more mobility options for the safety of San Diego community members and the health of our climate. These efforts include the expansion of separated, class IV bike lanes for a connected network of bike routes across San Diego. Through our commitment to Vision Zero and initiatives like our Bicycle Program, The City of San Diego aims to develop and maintain the safest and most connected bikeway system possible as defined in the Bicycle Master Plan. Separated bike lanes were installed on Rancho Mission Rd. to improve mobility and safety for all modes of transportation. Bicycle network improvements on streets like Rancho Mission Rd. and Friars Rd. are part of the adopted Mission Valley Community Plan [sandiego.gov]to create safe bike and alternative mobility connections within Mission Valley and with nearby communities. The Class IV bike lanes installed are physically separated from traffic by buffer space and floating vehicle parking and are also useable by micro-mobility devices such as scooters."
