Get ready, WNY. Significant lake effect snow on the horizon
Nov 25, 2024
We all knew this article would be coming eventually. After a relatively mild and quiet November, it sure looks like we'll be welcoming December with a colder and snowier lean.
Our first opportunity for wintry weather will arrive on Thanksgiving Thursday. A wave of low pressure will pass well south of the region. We'll be on the colder side of that low, likely cold enough to support at least some potential for snowfall. The main question comes in the exact track and evolution of this wave as several pieces of energy interact. I have questions surrounding whether that rain/snow will actually be able to make it this far north. Many models question that. The Euro remains aggressive in driving accumulating snow into the region. We should know more about this tomorrow. (Euro probability of at least 3" of snow by the end of Thursday seen below)
My focus is more on what's coming AFTER Thanksgiving. A much colder air mass will spill into the Great Lakes region Friday through at least early next week. This will likely support an extended stretch of lake effect potential. Exactly where these bands will be setting up is unclear, the byproduct of us still being very early in the game of having this conversation. But given our very warm lakes and what at least broadly and superficially appears to be a favorable setup ahead, it's possible we could be looking at a significant event where these bands develop.
SIGNIFICANT LAKE EFFECT EVENT? First things first, it's early. But we're already seeing the early signs of what could be an extended and significant lake effect event from Friday into early next week. The devil will be in the details (of which we won't be able to fine tune for… pic.twitter.com/jmJAN2XeOy— Eric Snitil (@EricSnitilWx) November 25, 2024
I've taken an early stab at greatest snow potential at this early juncture. Expect changes and manipulations in time as the event draws closer. Remember, lake effect is fickle. We're just offering an early heads up.
Snow aside, get ready for easily the coldest air of the season inbound. We're going to have a hard time cracking freezing for highs by the weekend.
