Cardinals can’t keep the pace in state semifinal loss to Falcons
Nov 14, 2024
MINNEAPOLIS – The LeRoy-Ostrander/Lyle-Pacelli football team simply ran out of big plays.
A highly competitive game went south in the late minutes as Fertile-Beltrami dominated with four straight scores to close out a 60-33 win in the Class Nine Man semifinals at US Bank Stadium Thursday.
L-O/L-P senior and Mr. Football candidate Camden Hungerholt threw for 238 yards, three scores and two interceptions and he ran for 152 yards and one TD, but it wasn’t enough.
“I just feel like I let everybody down,” an emotional Hungerholt said after the loss. “I just want to say sorry to the community, the coaches and the team.”
While he took the blame, Hungerholt’s teammates made sure that he knew what he meant to the program.
“He’s the heart and soul of our team,” senior Carter Sweeney said of his quarterback.
The Falcons (12-0 overall) were able to ride running back Isiah Wright for most of the day as he poured out 361 rushing yards on 24 carries with seven scores. Wright used a patient approach to set up his big runs and he eventually wore down L-O/L-P’s front line.
“We definitely made him look better than he was,” said L-O/L-P senior Ryder Stern. “We were all over the place and it just wasn’t our game. He’s fast and he’s shifty, but we had to do better against him.”
The first half saw both teams make plenty of big plays as Hungerholt hit his younger brother Reid for TD passes of 36- and 66-yards before he found Stern on a screen pass that turned into a 45-yard TD after he broke a tackle and scored with 17 seconds left in the half.
The Cardinals (12-1 overall) held a 27-22 lead at the half and they took a 33-30 lead when Tyson Stevens scored with 4:30 left in the third quarter.
L-O/L-P had a big senior class this season, including Hungerholt, Sweeney, and Stern, who all played on the state championship Cardinal team in 2021.
“I’ve been around these guys for 12 years since they were kindergartners,” L-O/L-P head coach Trevor Carrier said. “It’s a terrible feeling (to lose today). We went 12-1 and went to the Bank, but to say goodbye to them, it’s going to be a tough one. These kids work hard, they make sacrifices and they’re great students in the classroom. If my son grows up to be as good a kid as these guys are, I’ll be happy.”
