$250K grants to fund speedmanagement plan for Holyoke

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - The City of Holyoke has been awarded state and federal grants of nearly $250,000 to fund the preparation of a comprehensive speed-management plan to improve road safety.
The city of Holyoke is looking to develop a plan that supports safe and convenient travel for everyone, whether in a car, on foot, or on a bicycle.
Concerns rise as drought continues in Massachusetts
The city will be putting together a stakeholder task force that'll work with a consultant over a period of months to develop a speed-management plan. Holyoke Ward 4 City Councilor Kocayne Givner will chair the Task Force. She hopes this task force will find ways to reduce the number of drivers not only speeding but also running stop signs and lights. Givner says one way could be to add speed bumps to a lot of busy city streets.
"Speeding through the city is incredibly unsafe for everyone who lives here. And we've had some bad news over the years for with pedestrian incidents and bike incidents and, of course, car crashes. So I'm just happy to see this funding available. I really think that now we can find some solutions and start to implement them," said Givner.
Givner hopes to start the task force in January and continue it over a 6 month span. Those interested in participating in the task force can apply by contacting the Mayor's Office at 413-561-1600.
