COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) - As the holiday season approaches, the Salvation Army in central Ohio is gearing up for its annual programs that benefit children, seniors and families, and it's asking community members for help. The organization is looking for volunteers for its Red Kettle Campaign, along with the Christmas Cheer program and Angel Tree Toy Drive. The Red Kettle fundraiser has been a tradition since 1891, according to the Salvation Army. The two-hour bell-ringing shifts raise money to provide meals, funding for programming and more for families in central Ohio. The agency's Christmas Cheer program is also a holiday staple when helping others in need. The program serves more than 4,700 lower-income families each year, providing them with gifts to celebrate and a Christmas dinner. Volunteers are needed with this program to help with sorting toys, organizing food donations and gift distribution needs. Businesses and organizations can participate by collecting toys and donations from employees and customers. Collections will be distributed through the Christmas Cheer program the week before Christmas. Over 10,000 children were given a gift to open on Christmas through the Angel Tree program, according to the Salvation Army. “Central Ohioans looking for an impactful way to give joy during the holidays make excellent volunteers for The Salvation Army,” Maj. Tricia Brennan said. “In our hardest times, we always remember who showed up for us. Volunteering for the Salvation Army is an ideal opportunity for those who wish to give back and experience the true spirit of the holidays.” If you aren't able to volunteer as a bell-ringer or participate in the programs, you can donate online through the Salvation Army's virtual Red Kettle fundraiser. According to the website, its goal is to raise $50,000. To volunteer for any of these programs, follow this link. To donate, follow this link.
