Why you should shovel around fire hydrants

(COLORADO) — As you're out clearing yet another round of snow in your area, consider clearing around your nearest fire hydrant--you never know how those extra minutes spent trying to clear the snow might impact firefighters and your neighbors.
Black Forest Fire/Rescue (BFFR) posted a request on Facebook, asking community members to clear the snow from fire hydrants if they have one on or near their property.
"Hopefully we’ll never have to use it, but if there’s a fire hydrant near your home, please help firefighters by clearing snow around it," BFFR said.
BFFR also shared an image of a firefighter attempting to hook up a hose to a hydrant in deep snow, with the implication that those few precious minutes lost struggling with the hydrant could mean the worst for people and property in the event of a fire.

BFFR asked community members to consider shoveling a 3-foot perimeter around the hydrant and clear a path to the street, even if the hydrant isn't on your property.

"Time is precious during a fire and the faster firefighters are able to get a water supply, the better. The emergency could be yours, so thank you for helping us!" BFFR said.
