Nichole Rice trial pushed back once again
Nov 07, 2024
MINOT, ND (KXNET) — The trial for the woman charged with the 2007 murder of her roommate, Anita Knutson, has been rescheduled, once again.
District Court Judge Richard Hagar approved Nichole Rice's motion for a continuance during a hearing on Thursday.
This comes after Rice's new attorney, Richard Sand, said he needs more time to get up to speed with the case, after Rice's lead attorney, Phillip Becher, quit the law firm representing her.
Sand also stated in the continuance motion that an evidence report recently submitted by the state needs further review. He believes that the report speaks to his theory of a different suspect in the murder, Devin Hall, who was recently re-interviewed about the murder.
Sand revealed that Hall chose to invoke his right to remain silent when questioned about the murder weapon, during his recent deposition. This led to the main topic of the hearing: the current investigation into the Minot Police Department's Chief, John Klug.
Hearing set for Nov. 7 to discuss postponing Nichole Rice trial
"Mr. Klug's investigation in the original time of death, as well as the original arrest of Mr. Hall, is of the utmost importance," Sand told the Judge. "On top of that, he was the officer that was here through all of it. He's the one that reached out to the press and said that my client had been incarcerated and they have the person responsible. So, he is the face of this case for the Minot Police Department in the beginning and the end and we think whatever comes of this, is extraordinarily important."
The judge set the new trial date for March 17-April 4 2025, which will still be held in Grand Forks for three weeks. According to Minot's city attorney, the investigation report into Klug is expected to be released sometime next week.
