CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Drivers experienced a major delay during their morning and evening commutes on Interstate 95 in Caroline County on Thursday due to a multi-vehicle crash that caused all southbound travel lanes to be shut down for hours. At 6:33 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, Virginia State Police responded to a crash on I-95 southbound in Caroline County near the Carmel Church and Ladysmith exits that involved five vehicles, which included a tractor-trailer and a trash truck. An investigation by state police determined that the tractor-trailer was merging in from a rest area onto I-95 when it collided with the trash truck -- causing a chain reaction crash with three other cars, leading to a fire. According to state police, there was only one minor injury reported, which was not considered to be life-threatening. At 4 p.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) said one lane on I-95 southbound had been reopened and the detour in place to the Ladysmith exit was lifted. However, VDOT reported that there was still a 12-mile backup due to the crash, and major delays were expected to continue on I-95 southbound, Route 1 and other nearby roads until all southbound lanes were reopened. Officials said heavy fire from the crash severely damaged the pavement in the left and center travel lanes on I-95 southbound and an emergency work zone was underway to begin repairs to more than 150 feet of roadway. VDOT said workers must ensure a safe, smooth surface before reopening lanes to traffic. At around 10:30 p.m., VDOT reported that all southbound lanes were reopened as crews finished milling, paving and striping the lanes damaged from the fiery crash. According to VDOT, traffic signal timing was adjusted along the Route 1 corridor in both Spotsylvania and Caroline counties to reduce congestion. For real-time traffic updates, visit VDOT's website.
