FAIRMONT HEIGHTS, Md. (DC News Now) -- National School Bus Safety Week is from Oct. 21 to Oct. 25 and transportation leaders in Prince George's County are reminding everyone about ways we can keep students safe. Whether you're a parent, student, driving the school bus or your car transportation leaders say everyone has a role to play to ensure students get to and from school safely. "I want folks to understand that school bus is the safest form of transportation, for our students. But that's only if we're paying attention to safety practices on the road," said Keba Baldwin, Director of Transportation for Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS). AI drone aims to enhance safety in Prince George’s County Every day in Prince George's County, hundreds of bus drivers are working hard to get 85,000 students to and from school safely. "We are the alpha and omega in your in your kids' lives on every scholastic day. We are the first and the last they see," said Essence Herndon, President of ACE-AFSCME Local 2250 an Educational Support Personnel Union that also represents bus drivers. Over the past year, there have been issues including major delays, school bus crashes, and even an attempted shooting on the bus in May 2023. Recently a pickup truck was pinned under a PGCPS school bus on the Capital Beltway. On Wednesday, Oct. 23, Prince George's County police investigated a man being picked up by a PGCPS school bus and taken to D.C. while three elementary students were on board. PGPD: Unknown man boarded elementary school bus while 3 students on board Incidents like this have raised concerns. Baldwin said they're continuously working to ensure safety by providing bus drivers with more training, new GPS tracking on buses, cameras both inside and outside the bus, an improved communication system and more. "We have installed a lot of those safety enhancements on the bus, and we are continuing to work with staff towards improvement," said Baldwin. Safety doesn't just stop there, transportation leaders are asking drivers on the road to also do their part. Here's what you can do as a driver to ensure students are safe to and from school: Look out for the amber lights at the top of the bus, "If you don't know don't go" Stay off your phone Slow down near bus stops and school zones "We just ask for some support from the parents to make sure that the students, their students, just follow the rules of, you know, bus safety for the outside of the bus," said Herndon. "It takes a full community effort to make sure that our students are safe," added Baldwin.
