"You know the holiday season has started now," said Zach Wilson, Reyn Spooner manager. "We're seeing a lot of orders coming in already in late October, or mid October right now, and the orders are really big for families, so we're getting some pick up already," said Ed Sugimoto, VHO7V owner. Tina Yamaki of Retail Merchants of Hawaii, said stores are jumping ahead of "Black Friday" with what she calls "Gray October," piggybacking off Amazon's prime day sale. "Because we know people have an X amount of money to spend on the holidays for gifts and things like that and so everybody kind of wants to go after that dollar," said Yamaki. "So they're starting their sales early this year as well." The National Retail Federation predicts consumer spending to be up between 2.5% and 3.5 % this season compared to last year. Yamaki said Hawaii tends to follow. Retailers have their holiday specials planned. "That's a holiday tradition and they're flying off the shelves." Some new. At Aloha Revolution, they're launching a PO box service during what could be the ideal time. "It's to prevent porch pirates at their house, small businesses can use us as a business address instead of their home address, and just for safety and security they can have their mail delivered here instead of at their house or office," said Sugimoto. The holiday shopping season is a little shorter this year. Thanksgiving falls on the last week of November, the 28th, giving shoppers about a week less time. Retailers are hoping that doesn't matter. "Hopefully it doesn't affect us too much," said Sugimoto. "But I think everybody shops on Black Friday, Cyber Monday, so we'll be ready on both of those days for us as well." Yamaki suggests if you shop early, make sure you check the stores return policy. And don't wait too long. Some stores have limited supplies so you might not get the size, color, or style you're looking for.
