SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Commuters who rely on public transportation throughout San Diego will face some new modifications regarding fare enforcement next year. The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System Board of Directors approved changes to the agency's Fare Enforcement Diversion Program which will be phased in over the next three months, according to a release from MTS Thursday. Beginning Feb. 1, riders caught without a valid fare during MTS inspections will be issued a citation on the spot, the release stated. National City encampment ban goes into effect Although the policy will be effective systemwide, most of the change will impact Trolley riders, MTS said. A citation will result in a $25 fine if cleared through the MTS diversion program. Riders who have no previous citations may have their first one dismissed when they appeal through the diversion program. However, if it is not cleared within 120 days, riders could face a fine of at least $192 fine in traffic court. It also said that more than 57,000 riders per month do not pay their fare unless an MTS security officer takes their on-the-spot payment. The new rules are expected to increase fare revenue for MTS, the release stated.
