Outgoing Schools Chancellor David Banks announced Thursday that he — like his erstwhile boss Mayor Adams — is writing a book, in his case, about his time leading the nation’s largest school system. Banks, who was pushed out by the mayor before he could retire at the end of the year, after his apartment was raided and phones seized as part of a federal corruption probe, gave New York City public school parents a clue for what’s next for the 40-year veteran educator. “I’m actually gonna write a book,” Banks revealed during his final meeting with the Chancellor’s Parent Advisory Council on Thursday. “I’ve been writing a book since I got here.” Banks credited the idea to former Chancellor Joel Klein, who served under then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who warned him so much happens in a single day in the role that he won’t remember what happened a year ago. Adams, too — who’s been critical of the media coverage of his administration — has repeatedly suggested to reporters that the narrative will be set straight when his own book comes out. “I captured my notes on a daily basis,” Banks said, “and I’ve not missed a day since I’ve started. Every meeting that I’ve had, everything that I do. Before I go to bed at night, I reflect on it. It’s captured, I edit it. And I’ve got, like, binders now.” “That’s just raw data. But when I reflect back on the themes that have emerged since I’ve been here, I’m going to capture all that into a story.” Banks’ final day at the helm of the city’s sprawling school district is Tuesday, when incoming Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos will take over.
