SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — An off-duty San Diego police officer died in Riverside on Saturday hours after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and released from jail. Lawrence Orso, a 46-year-old Murrieta resident and 15-year SDPD veteran, was found unresponsive in the parking lot outside the Cois Byrd Detention Center in French Valley just before 10 a.m., according to the Riverside County Sheriff and San Diego Police Department. Upon arrival to the scene, Riverside County sheriff's deputies located Orso and began lifesaving measures until paramedics arrived. He was later pronounced dead. Riverside County booking records show Orso had been arrested on suspicion of DUI hours earlier, around 2:19 a.m., by California Highway Patrol near the intersection of Murrieta Hot Springs Road and Interstate 215. He was released with a misdemeanor citation just before 8:30 a.m., an hour-and-a-half before his death. Further information about what led up to Orso's death has not been released, including the cause. However, the sheriff's department said there "was no evidence of foul play." An investigation remains ongoing. In a statement, SDPD Acting Lt. Travis Easter described the veteran officer's death as a "medical emergency," adding that the department is cooperating with Riverside law enforcement as they investigate the incident. Orso was first hired by the department in 2009, serving as a patrol officer in the Mid-City and Northeastern divisions, according to SDPD. "His family is in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time," Easter said.
