WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Gov. Dan McKee, joined by other state leaders, unveiled newly constructed bus stops at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) in Warwick on Friday. McKee celebrated the milestone, which is part of a plan to revitalize statewide transportation, calling it a "big win." He said these changes echo the "In every home, every day, learning matters" initiative that is driving incentives for student attendance. ‘Learning matters’: State leaders recognize decline in chronic absences Four stops, now feature real-time information screens, lighting, trash cans, accessible seating for wheelchairs and other mobility devices, and solar panels to generate power. "In just the past year, nearly 100,000 people have passed through this stop -- an impressive number that highlights the valuable role that RIPTA plays in our students' lives and the surrounding community," CCRI Interim President Dr. Rosemary Costigan said. Rhode Islanders can expect to see more improvements to public transportation in the coming years. A state planning council adopted a transit master plan in 2020 that outlines ways to boost the system. The plan says that enhancing mobility, reducing gas emissions, and encouraging active transportation would support economic growth in the state and make it a better place to live, work and play. "Another aspect of making college education accessible is being able to get there," Sen. Jack Reed, who helped secure funding for the $1.8 million project through the Federal Transit Administration, said. CCRI's bus stops are just one of the initiatives outlined in that plan.
