These New York basketball fans named their firstborn son Knickson Fyve (Yes, really!)
Oct 22, 2026
When the Knicks won the NBA championship, first-time mom Yvonne Gonzalez-Bradford was 7 months pregnant. She and her husband Vance Bradford had names picked out for their baby: Lady Victoria if the baby was a girl and Prestige Wisdom if the baby was a boy.
But then came the big win.
Living on
the 29th floor of a Long Island City highrise across the river from Manhattan, the couple opened up their windows and heard the city chanting, “Knicks in five! Knicks in five! Knicks in five!”
The following day, Vance tells TODAY.com his wife looked at him and said, “’What if we give our son a name for a champion? What about Knickson?’”
Vance loved the idea, especially since he comes from a family of die-hard Knicks fans, and even without the sports component, the name stands on its own. “Knickson Bradford sounds fantastic! He owns oil, if you ask me,” Vance jokes.
And two days later, Yvonne suggested Fyve as a potential middle name.
“You know how when something happens so well in your favor, you don’t want to jinx it?” Vance says, remembering how he had to try to downplay his excitement. “I was just like, ‘Yep! Absolutely. That’s it!’”
Fyve has a more layered meaning for Vance.
“The Roman numeral for five is ‘V,’ like my name, so he’s named after me in a way,” says Vance. “Five is also an indivisible number. So he’s our indivisible champion. You can hear him cooing in the background right now.”
Knickson Fyve Bradford (go ahead — say it out loud!) was born on Aug. 8, 2026, weighing 8 pounds, 8 ounces, making the number 8 significant to his arrival. And to top it all off, he was born on Yvonne’s birthday.
Knickson Fyve comes from a family of die-hard Knicks fans.
And his connection to the Knicks runs deep into family history.
Vance’s mother, Sydell Johnson, was the scorekeeper for the team when they last won the championship in 1973. She passed away unexpectedly last year. The devastation he felt in 2025 gave way to joy in 2026.
“I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, Ma, you went up there and you sent us one,’” Vance says. “She sent down a Knicks championship!”
Although Knickson Fyve seems to be destined to support the Knicks and the Brooklyn Knights, just like his parents, Vance plays it cool about people on Instagram asking what happens if he starts cheering for a different team.
“If he turns out to be a Celtics fan or a Sixers fan, again he’s still Knickson Bradford, who is in the boardroom,” Vance says with good humor. “We wanted to have a very strong and firm name that would lead to a cool life. Knickson Fyve is definitely our motto. Knickson Fyve forever!”
