A 67-year-old man will remain behind bars after he pleaded guilty to several felony charges.
Allen Matis reached a plea deal with prosecutors on Thursday, in which he pleaded guilty to charges of driving under the influence manslaughter and vehicular homicide. As part of the agreement, he will sp
end six years in prison followed by two years of house arrest and six years of probation.
“Because you are telling me this is your decision and your decision only?” asked the judge.
“Yes, ma’am,” said Matis.
In court, he took full responsibility for the crime.
“I pray to him every night and I beg him for forgiveness,” said Matis.
The deadly crash occurred on June 24 in the 2900 block of Southwest 57th Avenue.
Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies said Matis blew through a stop sign and crashed his car through the wall of 83-year-old Henri Bezy’s home, killing the elderly man as he slept inside.
Authorities said Henri remained trapped underneath the vehicle in the aftermath of the crash.
Body camera footage captured the dramatic aftermath of the crash. Deputies used their flashlights to enter the home and escorted Matis out of the home as their investigation began.
According to an arrest report, Matis’ blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit at the time of the crash.
Henri’s sister, Claire, and a family friend spoke moments after the hearing, reacting to the sentence.
“Now there’s a void taking his place, and nothing will ever change that. Nothing will bring him back,” she said.
“It’s not for me to say one way or the other. That’s something that it is what it is,” said family friend Gary Wilcox. “I know it’s not easy on him either. At 67 to go into prison. This is going to be bad for him, so I will pray for him.”
Wilcox said Claire was living in the home too at the time of the crash and has since lost her brother and her residence.
“Her house was destroyed. She left with the clothes on her back. She has to start over at 88 years old,” he said.
The family said Henri was weeks away from turning 84. They say he was a former military, law enforcement and long haul trucker who loved to fish and eat a good meal.
Claire said while she’s still grieving the loss of her brother, she is trying to focus on the positive.
“His loyalty to his friends and his generosity,” she said.
Following the hearing, Matis’ attorney, Bruce Lehr, said his client hopes the family can forgive him.
“He showed the most remorse I’ve ever seen by any defendant,” he said.
Henry’s loved ones hope this tragic story leaves everyone with one clear message: Do not drink and drive.
