tors were searching for the gunman since the shooting took place, a shooting that paralyzed traffic on the upper level of the GWB given that the bridge was shut down around 7 p.m.
On Wednesday, it came to light that police were questioning a retired NYPD detective in the shooting, which investigators said could have happened because of road rage.
What we know about the alleged shooter?
The NYPD identified the suspect as 62-year-old Victor Romero, confirming he was charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a 46-year-old off-duty Con Edison worker.
Romero has been retired for 25 years.
Law enforcement sources said the victim, later identified as Koran Irvine, of Rockland County was gunned down Tuesday night when the gunman fired a shot through a window of the man’s car, striking him in the shoulder and exiting his neck. The shooting shut down the bridge around 7 p.m.
According to one source, the retired detective they were questioning had a similar commute to and from Rockland County as that of Irvine.
Although police say Romero’s car is in NYPD custody, they have not shared the make and model yet. However, almost since the start of the investigation, authorities were looking into whether the suspect was driving a black Range Rover that is possibly involved in the apparent road rage shooting. They were using surveillance cameras to piece together what happened.
Romero’s house in Haverstraw is “frozen,” police said — in other words, the home is off limits pending a search warrant and investigation.
Attorney information for Romero was not immediately known.
The events leading to the shooting
According to sources, the victim was captured on video nearly crashing his blue Volkswagen Golf into another driver on an entrance ramp to the GWB.
Shortly after, Irvine’s back passenger window was shot out with what law enforcement sources believe was a lone gunshot.
The bullet appeared to strike the driver’s seat headrest before entering the driver’s body, law enforcement sources told News 4. The victim’s car later struck a median, bringing it to a full stop.
The suspect was seen driving on.
Police are calling this a road rage incident, two sources familiar with the matter tell News 4.
Authorities remained on scene through much of the night canvassing the area for ballistics and have been reviewing surveillance cameras for more information about the other car involved.
As of Wednesday afternoon, police have recovered the bullet fragment inside Irvine’s car. It is currently being analyzed.
All lanes of the bridge reopened around 1 a.m.
Who was the victim?
Irvine lived in Valley Cottage, with his wife and two children. Neighbors described their experience living near the 46-year-old and his family.
“He was a very nice man,” neighbor Hope Dorceoly said. “We moved into the neighborhood; I remember when we first came, he would help us out. They had chickens in the back. He brought us chicken eggs to welcome us in. He was just a really nice guy; we’re in shock, and we are devastated for the family.”
Con Edison acknowledged Irvine’s death in a statement Wednesday.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a member of the Con Edison family in this senseless act of violence. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew and loved him,” it said.
