(KRON) -- A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle near Richmond High School Thursday morning, police said. The Richmond Police Department told KRON4 that the crash occurred near the intersection of Maricopa Avenue and 23rd Street. Police told KRON4 they got the call just before 6:30 a.m. N o sign of woman who disappeared swimming near Antioch Marina Richmond PD officers arrived on the scene and found a victim with severe trauma from the collision. The victim, police said, was pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle driver remained on the scene, along with the Richmond PD Traffic Unit, which is investigating. A family member identified the victim as 65-year-old Douglas Vargas. Vargas was a retired dentist who was from San Francisco but practiced in Daly City. According to his family, he lived on the street where he was struck and killed for about 20 years. Vargas' nephew told KRON4 he was most likely out collecting aluminum cans when he was hit. Vargas' wife had died last week. The couple leaves behind three children. The roadway remains closed to traffic.
