Ten Cook County Jail staffers suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to hospitals after a detainee apparently lit a small mattress on fire at the jail Sunday afternoon. About 3 p.m., correctional deputies responded to a small mattress fire that appeared to have been set by an individual in custody inside his cell on Tier 5A in the residential treatment unit, according to a statement from the Cook County sheriff's office. Deputies quickly extinguished the fire and evacuated the individual in custody, who was the sole occupant of the cell, according to the statement. As Chicago fire department firefighters extinguished the fire, it created heavy smoke so all individuals in custody on that tier and all other tiers on the fifth floor were evacuated as a precaution, the statement said. The individual in custody inside the cell where the fire occurred was transported to a local hospital in good condition as a precaution, and ten correctional deputies who responded to the fire were also transported as a precaution to local hospitals, where their conditions had stabilized, the sheriff's office said. The detainee has since been discharged from the hospital and cleared to return to the jail as well as all other evacuated inmates, according to the sheriff's office.
