(KRON) — More than 50,000 volunteers turned out at over 750 cleanup sites on Saturday to take part in the 42nd annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, according to officials. The goal was to “remove hundreds of thousands of pounds of trash before it could be washed out to sea during the rainy sea son,” the Coastal Commission said. The event had a special meaning as it also celebrates the 50th anniversary of the California Coastal Act. Officials said the total trash pickup count so far is 96 tons. “With 40% of the cleanup sites reporting, the statewide count stands at 24,835 volunteers,” the Coastal Commission said. "Those volunteers picked up 185,003 pounds of trash and an additional 7,051 pounds of recyclable materials, for a total of 192,054 pounds, or 96 tons. Officials said volunteers showed up to clean at beaches, shorelines and inland waterways throughout all of California’s 58 counties, across the entire coastline and even as far inland as Lake Tahoe. “Coastal Cleanup Day is always a great day for our coast, but this year proved even more significant,” said Executive Director Kate Huckelbridge. “As we celebrate the Coastal Act, this year’s cleanup helped to highlight the volunteers and coastal advocates who will carry the legacy of the Coastal Act forward into the next 50 years of protecting and preserving our coast and ocean.” ...read more read less
