Black Wealth Crawl highlights local businesses
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An event in Indianapolis starting Friday aims to highlight Black-owned businesses in the city and invest directly into the local economy.
It’s called the Black Wealth Crawl, and it kicks off at 9:30 a.m. Friday, accordin
g to Anita Williams, the program director for the Indy Black Chamber of Commerce.
“I think one thing it does is let everybody in our local neighborhood, our communities know that we’re all welcome, that we’re all here to be supportive of all of our businesses,” Williams said. “We’ve not excluded anyone. So, that’s welcoming, and that’s what we need in our city, just to let everyone know that they’re welcomed here.”
Ben Tapper, chief diversity and equity officer for the Office of Equity, Belonging and Inclusion, said those wanting to participate can go to Indy By Design’s website and click the “Wealth Crawl” tab to see the participating businesses, pick one or two that you’d like to visit and once you make a purchase, you can scan a QR code near the register and can enter your information, which will get you into a raffle to win a $150 gift card.
“We’re trying to think of initiatives that make it easier to build wealth,” Tapper said. “So, this is one of our flagship initiatives: to be able to bring people and awareness to Black-owned businesses and to help drive some money and cash into the pockets of business owners.”
Black Wealth Crawl opens Friday at 9:30 a.m. and runs until Sept. 7.
