A total of 407 early votes were cast and 173 absentee ballots have been returned so far in the three-way race for the Democratic nomination for a west-side state representative seat. And a total of 136 early votes were cast and 75 absentee ballots have been returned so far in a two-way race for the Democratic nomination for an open east-side state rep seat. Head Moderator Kevin Arnold provided the Independent with those numbers on Monday, one day before the Aug. 11 Democratic primaries. Early voting ran from last Monday through Sunday at City Hall and at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU). Absentee ballot voting began on July 21; the last day to request an absentee ballot is Monday. While every New Haven Democrat can cast a ballot in Tuesday’s gubernatorial contest between two-term incumbent Gov. Ned Lamont and challenger Hamden State Rep. Josh Elliott, only Dems on the east and west sides of town can vote in New Haven’s two contested state rep primaries. One of those races is for the 92nd State House District, which covers parts of Amity, Westville, Edgewood, Dwight, West River, and the Hill. Incumbent State Rep. Pat Dillon is seeking another two years in office, and is facing challenges from fellow Democrats Eli Sabin and Justin Farmer. According to the Registrar of Voters office, as of Monday, there are 8,257 registered Democrats in the 92nd District. (There are also 531 Republicans, 3,716 unaffiliated voters, and 137 third-party voters, making a total of 12,641 registered voters in the district.) Between early voting and absentee ballots, a total of 580 92nd District Dems — or 7 percent of that district’s Democratic electorate — have already voted. The other contested local state rep race on tap for Tuesday is in the 97th State House District, which covers parts of Fair Haven, Quinnipiac Meadows, Fair Haven Heights, the Annex, and Morris Cove. Morris Cove Alder Leland Moore and Fair Rent Commission Executive Director Wildaliz Bermudez are vying to fill that seat, which has been held for the past decade by State Rep. Al Paolillo, who is now running for the 11th State Senate District seat. As of Monday, that are 6,108 registered Democrats in the 97th District. (There are also 1,130 Republicans, 4,196 unaffiliated voters, and 131 third-party voters, making a total of 11,538 registered voters in the district.) Between early voting and absentee ballots, a total of 211 97th District Dems – or 1.8 percent of that district’s Democratic electorate — have already voted.
