Sausalito’s city manager made her first court appearance Tuesday since her arrest last weekend. Elaine Forbes, the newly-hired city manager for Sausalito and longtime former director of the Port of San Francisco, faces misdemeanor charges of unlawful lodging, petty theft and prowling. Yacht captain Bill Aubrey discovered Forbes barricaded aboard the Lisa Marie at the Sausalito Yacht Harbor early Saturday morning after hearing her repeatedly blow the horn. He got in the vessel through a window and found Forbes barefoot and acting strange. “She just looked at me, put a smile on her face and said, ‘Good morning,'” Aubrey said. “And I said, ‘Good morning to you. How’s your day going?’ And she goes, ‘Good.’ And I said, ‘Why don’t you just have a seat right here?'” Aubrey called police, who said they had been looking for Forbes for days. She had been reported missing last week. Andy Cunningham said Forbes had been on board her boat, too. Cunningham said Forbes left it completely ransacked. “She pretty much ransacked the whole thing with clothing, jewelry, glassware, alcohol, salt, cherries, maraschino cherries,” Cunningham said. “She basically made a complete and utter disaster of the whole boat, throwing things this way and that.” Forbes was wearing Cunningham’s clothes when she was found and arrested, Cunningham said. sausalito Jul 20 Sausalito leaders to discuss city manager's job after arrest, charges sausalito Jul 19 Sausalito city manager arrested while on leave Sam Singer, a Forbes family spokesman, said Forbes was suffering a mental health crisis. “Elaine had a mental breakdown,” Singer said. “She believed that she was on her boat, not somebody else’s boat.” Singer said Forbes is now hoping to get the help she needs. He said she wants to stay behind bars for now. “Elaine and her family are working to get counseling,” Singer said. “They’re speaking with a variety of different providers. They’re speaking with her attorney and they’re going to get her on the right path because she is a beloved, respected Bay Area public servant.” Forbes is scheduled to be back in court on Wednesday. ...read more read less
