Brannon Ciora had a rude awakening early Sunday morning. His phone alerted him to a break-in at his Poway restaurant, The Mexican Bar. Ciora called 911 as he watched surveillance video of two men with crowbars prying open the front door of the restaurant and going inside. The two rifled throug h the cash drawer and then headed toward the alarm panel, ripping it off the wall but it was too late; the alarm began blasting so loud that the men appeared to panic and ran outside. “They got scared and bailed out of there,” Ciora told NBC7. Ciora believes the would-be crooks targeted his restaurant after a busy weekend that included big crowds for World Cup soccer, Padres games and a busy brunch. “They thought they would come in and get some cash and get out, but they didn’t,” Ciora explained. He never leaves money in the register overnight and says no small business should. “You keep your doors locked, keep your safe hidden, and keep no cash in your registers,” Ciora said. Ciora’s wife posted videos of the attempted heist on Instagram and thousands of people have watched it. The goal is to get someone to identify the two men who wore dark clothing and whose faces are difficult to see. “We do want to catch them,” Ciora said. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating what they say appears to be a random act. No other reports of business burglaries using crowbars have been reported in the area, according to Lt. Colin Hebeler.
