The Oakland City Council is set to vote Tuesday on an updated “City of Refuge” ordinance aimed at expanding protections for the city’s immigrant community. Oakland became a sanctuary city nearly 40 years ago when city leaders enacted laws in 1986 to protect immigrants from federal enforceme nt. The proposed ordinance would add new protections. If approved, the ordinance would restrict the collection of immigration status on city applications to keep residents’ information private. The proposal would also prohibit city employees and Oakland police officers from asking about a person’s legal status or sharing that information with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
