A witness to Wednesday’s deadly shooting following a graduation ceremony in Fairfield described a frightening and tragic scene.
As Sem Yeto Continuation High School graduates streamed out of the stadium at Fairfield High School Wednesday evening to meet up with their families after the ceremony
, gunfire erupted in the parking lot. An 18-year-old died and three others were hurt.
“I was giving my sister flowers and about to take a picture with my sister when we heard multiple bangs,” witness Raymundo Enriquez said.
Enriquez said he saw a child in a hoodie running and a graduate in his gown lying lifeless on the ground. Enriquez rushed over to him to try to help.
“I ripped open his gown,” Enriquez said. “I lifted up his shirt. I didn’t see anything on his chest, stomach or the back, but then I followed the trail of blood and that’s where I seen he had a wound in the back of his head.”
Enriquez said the screams from the victim’s mother and brother are something he’ll never forget.
“He just started yelling, ‘My brother, my brother! That’s my brother! Who did that?'” Enriquez said. “A little after that I heard another lady screaming, ‘My son! My baby! My son!'”
Fairfield police said an 11-year-old was wounded and two adults in their 20s were also hit during the shooting. All three suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

On Thursday, a mother and her children brought balloons and a teddy bear to the scene. The mother, Ashley Combs, was also at the school to watch her daughter graduate.
“Even though I know it was a graduation, we haven’t really thought about the graduation because we’re so sad about what happened to him and how his mom feels,” Combs said. “I’m so sorry that happened. And when one mother cries, we all cry.”
Fairfield police announced Thursday they will deploy extra officers to all high school graduation ceremonies over the coming days.
Fairfield High School’s graduation, scheduled for Friday, will now be held at Armijo High School.
