INDIANA (WOWO): Indiana teens will soon be able to get their driver’s licenses earlier under a new law signed by Mike Braun. Beginning July 1, the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles will start issuing driver’s licenses to eligible teens on their 16th birthday. The change lowers the state’s previ ous minimum licensing age from 16 years and 90 days. The update is part of House Enrolled Act 1200, which Braun signed into law in March. “Getting a driver’s license is an important milestone for young Hoosiers and their families,” Braun said in a statement. “This commonsense change gives families more flexibility while maintaining the strong safety standards and training requirements that help keep Indiana roads safe.” State officials say licensing requirements themselves are not changing. To qualify for a license at 16, teens must still: Hold an Indiana learner’s permit for at least 180 days Pass the written knowledge test Complete a driver’s education course Submit a supervised driving log Pass vision and driving tests A parent, guardian or another responsible adult must also sign a financial liability agreement for the teen driver. The law also allows 16-year-olds to obtain motorcycle endorsements if they meet state requirements.
