May 15, 2026
Two children, believed to be 5 and 7 years old, were found dead inside a burning vehicle early Friday morning in San Antonio, police said.
Police identified the suspect as 34-year-old Marlene Vidal of Edinburg, who investigators say is the children’s mother.
Investigators said a person walki
ng a dog saw the vehicle on fire and encountered a woman at the scene who claimed she had already called authorities. The witness also called 911.
Assistant San Antonio Police Chief Jesus Salame Jr. said officers and firefighters responded to reports of a white Hyundai on fire near a warehouse.
“Once the fire was extinguished, we can now positively confirm the two children were found deceased inside of the vehicle,” Salame said.
He confirmed Vidal is the mother of the two children.
“At this stage of the investigation, we have statements made by the suspect, along with surveillance video and evidence from the scene that indicate she was solely responsible for the death of these two children,” said Salame.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office is working to identify the children.
Police declined to release additional details about where the children were found inside the vehicle or how the fire started, citing the ongoing investigation
Investigators also said they are working to determine if the suspect was dealing with mental health issues.
“Everyone’s going to want to know why something like this happened. And unfortunately, the why is sometimes the hardest question to answer,” Salame said.
Vidal has been taken into custody and charged with capital murder. In Texas, a capital murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life without parole or the death penalty.
