CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte-Douglas Airport’s newest runway will be equipped with first-of-its-kind technology. 2,000 small sensors will be placed underneath the northern end of the Fourth Parallel Runway, which is set to open next year. The sensors will transmit real-time data, allowing the airport and FAA to collect information that can improve safety and performance. Chief Infrastructure Officer Jack Christine says, “There’s all sorts of things that can come out of the data we’re collecting and the FAA, the tech center specifically, is really excited to be able to have something like this because they don’t have it anywhere else.” UNC Charlotte is also part of the project.
