How Omar Cooper Jr.’s spectacular catch has impacted his NFL Draft process
Apr 07, 2026
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — It was arguably the catch of the year in college football.
IU was trailing by four points with less than a minute remaining on the road against Penn State. Its undefeated season was on the line. On third down from the Nittany Lions’ seven yard line, Fernando Mendoza
lofted a pass to the back of the end zone. Omar Cooper Jr. leaped up with full extension, plucking the ball out of the air. He carefully snuck his left foot into the green grass of the endzone just before his right foot went out of bounds, securing the go-ahead touchdown.
Cooper’s catch kept IU’s undefeated season alive and the Hoosiers carried the momentum to the national championship.
It was a defining moment of Cooper’s career as a Hoosier, and one that has come up frequently as he meets with teams ahead of the NFL Draft.
“Every team that I’ve been to for the most part have showed that play,” Cooper said. “They’re like, ‘I’m sure you’ve probably seen this a million, a thousand times, but can’t go without showing this one.’ So they just ask me to explain it. But I mean, it’s opened so many doors.”
Cooper, along with some of his Hoosiers teammates, attended Colts Local Pro Day on Tuesday. Cooper did not take part in any drills, but was there to meet with the Colts.
“Everything is a dream come true and just grateful for this opportunity,” Cooper said.
Even though it was less than a week after IU held its own Pro Day, it was special for Cooper to be able to see his IU teammates again.
“They all deserve to be here,” Cooper said. “All really great players that have made special plays for us this year, past years, and they all deserve to be here just like everybody else here. Just the fact that we all were able to come again and see each other again before everybody goes their separate ways was a good time.”
Cooper had 69 catches for 937 yards and 13 touchdowns last season with IU. He shared what he brings to the NFL team that drafts him.
“Just a physical receiver, one that’s going to give his heart out every play and go hard,” Cooper said. “Competitive guy. Someone who’s willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win in whatever role that is. Someone who’s going to go out there willing to get better. Open to receive anything, knowledge, and just someone who’s going to make sure he’s growing each day.”
The NFL Draft is scheduled for April 23-25.
