MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — A young woman is dead after her vehicle was hit head-on by a wrong-way driver on I-65, just north of 61st Avenue. State police say just before 2 a.m. Saturday, 20-year old Rylee Hanson and a passenger were traveling northbound in the far-left lane in a black 2016 For d when a silver 2022 Toyota was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-65 and struck the Ford. The driver of the Toyota, 29-year-old Jessica Hughes from Hebron, Indiana, was airlifted to a hospital in Chicago due serious injuries and remains in critical condition. Hanson died at the scene. The female passenger of the Ford sustained serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital. According to a release by state police, prior to transport, troopers made observations of the driver that led investigators to believe that the driver was impaired. No charges have been filed for Hughes at this time.
