LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — The City of Lexington is looking for volunteers to help with a rescheduled overnight effort aimed at better understanding homelessness in the community. The Lex End Homelessness Continuum of Care announced that the 2026 LexCount — originally planned for late Ja nuary but postponed because of winter weather — will now take place from 10 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25. According to organizers, the annual count helps identify how many individuals and households are currently without shelter across Lexington. Volunteers will visit outdoor locations, help conduct surveys, distribute care packages, and assist people in connecting with emergency shelter resources. Teams can include up to four people, and volunteers are asked to form their own teams and select a captain before registering. Each group must provide its own transportation, with at least one designated driver available during the count. The city’s Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention says it will try to pair community teams with experienced service providers whenever possible. Teams may also request to be joined by a Lexington Police Department officer in the field, though officials say officer availability cannot be guaranteed and officers will not ride in team vehicles. Training is required for all participants. Organizers say volunteers should plan to complete a mandatory 45-minute online training session before the event.
