Todd Monken, named head coach of the Browns on Jan. 28, arrived at Browns headquarters in Berea, ready to get to work on a job he has been chasing for years. Monken landed at Cleveland Hopkins Airport in a private jet. Someone from Browns personnel filmed him on the short car ride to 76 Lou Groza Bo ulevard. Monken, who will turn 60 on Feb. 5, knew the route because he was the Browns’ offensive coordinator in 2019. In between Cleveland gigs, he was the offensive coordinator at the University of Georgia for three years and the OC with the Ravens the last three years. “It’s surreal,” Monken said as he looked out the window “It’s everything you work for your whole career. It’s the only reason I came back to the NFL, the reason I left Georgia, to give yourself a chance to be a head coach in the NFL, be one of the 32.” One of the people Monken greeted in his barren — for now — office was quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Monken joked about how the Ravens wanted to draft Sanders in 2025. Instead, the former Colorado quarterback slipped to the fifth round, where the Browns drafted Sanders 144th overall. it all worked out@Bullseye_Event | #DawgPound pic.twitter.com/5UC9kjyZnv — Cleveland Browns (@Browns) January 30, 2026 First Sanders shook hands with General Manager Andrew Berry as Sanders walked into Monken’s office, and then he flashed that million dollar smile as he shook hands with his new head coach. Sanders was 3-4 starting the final seven games for the Browns as a rookie. “How we doin’ man?” Monken said. “Good,” Sanders responded. “You know we (the Ravens) tried to draft you last year, for God’s sake,” Monken told Sanders. “It’s all worked out. You remember that, right?” “Yeah, that’s what I was about to tell you,” Sanders replied. “Someday, we’ll get a chance to talk about that,” Monken said before telling Sanders to “sit down” so the two could chat. The video cuts off at that point. A rumor surfaced during the draft that Sanders did not want the Ravens to draft him because he didn’t want to be stuck behind Lamar Jackson. Monken has reportedly settled on Travis Switzer as his new offensive coordinator, but a league source said at this point Switzer is a candidate for the job. Switzer spent the last three seasons as the Ravens’ run game coordinator. At least two minorities must be interviewed for a coordinator position before a hiring can be made official. Switzer, 33, graduated from the University of Akron in 2015. He was the Ravens’ offensive quality control coach in 2021-22. He was promoted to run game coordinator in 2023, which is when Monken arrived in Baltimore as the Ravens’ offensive coordinator. Monken also plans to raid the Ravens’ coaching staff to make Danny Breyer the Browns’ pass game coordinator. Breyer has been an offensive assistant with the Ravens the last three years. He worked primarily with the tight ends. George Warhop, the Ravens’ offensive line coach in 2024 and 2025, is the new/old offensive line coach of the Browns. He held the same position in Berea from 2009-13 when he worked under head coaches Eric Mangini (2009-10), Pat Shurmur (2011-12) and Rob Chudzinski in 2013. ...read more read less
