Richmond teachers strike continues after agreement was not reached
Dec 04, 2025
As one of the Richmond teachers’ strike comes to a close, a Thursday night meeting between the teachers union and school district did not result in an agreement between both sides, which means some teachers will be returning to the picket line Friday morning instead of their classrooms.
As teac
hers, staff, and parents picketed outside of the Alvarado Adult School in Richmond, a meeting was taking place inside of the school between the Richmond Teachers Union and members of the West Contra Costa Unified School District.
Both sides are at an impasse on a new contract, with teachers calling for better pay to keep teachers from leaving the district.
“I’ll tell you a story about the fourth grade class across from me, the guy is great teacher he had to leave because he couldn’t afford to raise a family here, and he went into finance and moved away,” said Chris Zepeda, a teacher.

Hundreds of educators prepare to strike in west Contra Costa County
Beginning Thursday, more than 1,500 teachers in the school district are going on strike, impacting more than 28,000 students across west Contra Costa County.
The union is calling for not just better pay but also improved health benefits and protections for teachers working under H1-B visas – a major concern with increased immigration enforcement under the Trump administration.
But after going back to the bargaining table this afternoon, the head of the teacher’s union informed teachers no agreement was reached.
However, the superintendent released a statement calling the meeting productive and asking for both sides to meet again tomorrow also adding, “There is no question that our district faces very complicated issues, many of them deep-rooted, systemic issues that demand our attention. My hope is that we can continue to work collaboratively to outline a path for moving forward with shared priorities and essential resource allocation.”
All schools will remain open during the strike with teachers expected to return to the picket line on Friday morning.
