EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - A 27-year-old woman was arrested for drunk driving with a 5-month-old baby in the vehicle on early Sunday morning, April 6, El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPCSO) said in a news release.
Ivana Dolores Salazar, 27, was charged with driving while intoxicated with a passenge
r under 15 years of age and endangering a child. She was booked into the El Paso County Jail with a total bond set at $23,000.
EPCSO said that shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, deputies conducted a traffic stop on a black Mercedes in the 3900 block of Rich Beem Boulevard for failing to signal a lane change.
During the roadside interview, Salazar told deputies she had just gotten off work and was on her way to pick up her newborn baby, EPCSO said.
EPCSO said that while speaking with Salazar, deputies observed a clear glass cup containing an unknown red liquid and were under suspicion that she was driving while intoxicated.
Salazar initially stated that no one else was in the vehicle. However, after placing her under arrest for suspicion of driving while intoxicated, deputies searched the vehicle and discovered a 5-month-old baby in a rear car seat that was not properly secured, EPCSO said.
EPCSO said that when questioned about the child, Salazar repeated that she had just left work and was on her way to pick up her baby.
Deputies then escorted her back to the vehicle and showed her the child in the back seat. At that point, Salazar became uncooperative and claimed she did not know the baby was in the car, EPCSO said.
In addition, deputies requested El Paso Fire Medical Services to respond to the scene to assess the baby’s condition.
EPCSO said the baby was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. Child Protective Services was also notified and released the baby to a "responsible party." ...read more read less
