NHL history: Washington Capitals' Alex Ovechkin breaks Wayne Gretzky's record with 895th goal

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Washington Capitals Captain Alex Ovechkin made hockey history on Sunday with his 895th career goal, officially breaking the record previously held by Wayne Gretzky.
Ovechkin scored the goal against the New York Islanders, bringing the Capitals to 1-2.
Regardless of
the score, a roar of cheers and chants erupted as the puck hit the net and NHL history was made. Ovechkin was immediately surrounded by his teammates as they congratulated him.

Ovechkin had tied Gretzky's goal record just this past Friday, at a home game against the Chicago Blackhawks.
A stark contrast to Ovechkin's start Friday - immediately scoring a goal within the first 10 minutes - by the end of the first period on Sunday, the Capitals were still 2-0 against the Islanders.
Just minutes after kicking off the second period, however, Ovechkin scored the long-awaited 895th goal.
