WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Two victims of a sudden stabbing spree in Northeast D.C. on Thursday were grateful that the community came together to help stop the suspect.
Police identified 34-year-old Kevin Andrade as the person accused of stabbing six people in the Trinidad neighborhood Thursday
afternoon. They are charging him with six counts of assault with intent to kill.
Walter Johnson was one of the victims.
“This dude just came at me with a knife, and he kind of got me right here,” said Johnson. “So, I put my hand up to block him.”
Johnson showed his injury to the back of his head caused during the stabbing spree. D.C. police say that Andrade was under the influence of an unknown substance during the attack.

Another neighbor, Christine Freeman, said she was stabbed in the face.
“I was walking, and this guy came, attacked me with his knife,” said Freeman. “Pushed me down on the ground, you know, was on top of me.”
Police said Andrade was walking on Meigs Place Thursday afternoon with a woman when he stabbed her, stabbed himself and then went after more victims.
“When I saw a knife coming towards my face, I tried to block it ... and I started kicking him,” said Freeman.
“I'm just glad that, you know, it's not worse than it is because I know a lot of people got it worse than I did,” said Johnson.

Police said Andrade also attacked a grandmother who was trying to protect her granddaughters before fleeing northbound on Montello Avenue, Northeast, where he attacked a sixth victim.
Good Samaritans from the community chased the suspect and subdued him before police arrived.
Investigators also recovered the knife they say he used in the attack.
“All I know is that it could have been a lot worse,” said Johnson. “And I'm thankful for all my neighbors who stepped up because there was one neighbor who actually helped administer first aid before the ambulance even got here.”
All the victims and the suspect are expected to survive.
Andrade was still in the hospital Friday, according to a D.C. Courts spokesperson. ...read more read less
