FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WISH) — One person is dead and another person is in the hospital Friday after their vehicle crashed during a police chase.
At 2:52 a.m. Friday, a Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) officer on patrol observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed around another vehic
le. The officer was able to catch up to the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop at the intersection of Lake Avenue and Laverne Avenue. After the police vehicle’s emergency lights were activated, the vehicle accelerated from the patrol vehicle, creating significant distance from the officer.
As the speeding vehicle crossed State Boulevard, the vehicle started to lose control and crashed into a tree. The vehicle caught on fire, but the two occupants were out of the vehicle at that time.
Both occupants were taken to a local hospital, with one occupant confirmed dead.
Investigators with the FWPD Fatal Crash Team were called to the scene to document the crash scene. Speed is a factor in the incident. This investigation is being assisted by the Allen County Coroner’s Office, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Fort Wayne Police Air Support Team.
