Time capsule from First Baptist Church of North Charleston was opened Wednesday; artifacts to be archived at CSU

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Artifacts from a soon-to-be demolished North Charleston church were uncovered Wednesday during a ceremony hosted by Charleston Southern University.
The First Baptist Church of North Charleston property has been sold and will soon be demolished to make room for so
mething new.
Former parishioners and leadership from the South Carolina Baptist Convention and members of the CSU community gathered on the campus Wednesday afternoon for a special ceremony where a time capsule from the church’s cornerstone was opened.
Items inside the time capsule included a 1959 church directory, a church bulletin from April 1960, and a Sunday newspaper from the then-News and Courier dated March 13, 1960, along with other periodicals from that time. The items will be archived and kept safe at the college.

The church has a special history with CSU. University officials say the church was the first location for Charleston Southern University, known then as the Baptist College at Charleston, where classes were held while the school’s first campus buildings were being constructed in 1965-1966.
