Senate staffer arrested for carrying gun on Capitol Grounds, police say

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- One of Sen. Cory Booker's (D-NJ) staff members was arrested Monday evening for carrying a pistol while at the U.S. Capitol, authorities confirmed.
The U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) said that on Monday afternoon, a Congressperson led an ID'd staff member - later identifie
d as 59-year-old Kevin A. Batts of New Jersey - around security screening at the Hart Senate Office Building.
Later that evening, outside the Senate Galleries, Batts, a retired law enforcement officer, told USCP officers he was armed.
Booker sets record for longest Senate speech in history
The USCP said he was arrested for carrying a pistol without a license.
"All weapons are prohibited from Capitol Grounds, even if you are a retired law enforcement officer, or have a permit to carry in another state or the District of Columbia," the USCP wrote in a statement to DC News Now.
Though the USCP did not confirm Batts's employing office, he is listed as a special assistant to Sen. Cory Booker on Legistorm.
